When I woke up today, I was hit with news I hoped wasn’t true, I still hope isn’t true, but sadly is true: Northeast Ohio has lost one of the nicest, funniest, most genuine personalities it ever had or ever will have, Mr. Jim Chenot.
Jim was a fixture on Northeast Ohio radio, from his days on WONE 97.5 to the present with his tenure at 91.3 The Summit. Not only did he feature a vast store of musical knowledge, but he was genuinely funny, a true class act, a complete professional, and thus was an utter joy to listen to.
He was also my friend.
I first met Jim Chenot at Time Traveler Records back in, man, I guess it was 2011. The earliest conversation I can recall was talking Springsteen with him. With us both being fans, an instant camaraderie was found. The fact that we shared a similar, non-sequitur sense of humor didn’t hurt, either.
Five years ago yesterday (!), my brother and I were set to be guests on Jim’s popular Radio Sandbox program. Unfortunately, the very night before, November 29, I had a serious accident at where I then-worked. While I was home and technically ready to go on November 30th, I was still kinda doped up and, frankly, not in the best of spirits. To my everlasting regret, I had to pull out of the spot at the proverbial last minute. And yet, Jim could not have been any nicer. His genuine concern and understanding made my situation a bit more bearable. But then, that was just Jim; he was like that with everyone.
We intended to do a make-up date on his show, but unfortunately, our schedules never aligned. That didn’t change the fact that I looked forward to his regular visits at Time Traveler. Whenever I saw him coming in through those doors, I knew we were in for some fun.
I am just completely shocked, saddened and sickened by this news. I don’t know really what else I can say, other than the world is going to be just that much more worse-off without Jim Chenot in it.
R.I.P. Jim, you will be missed.
